Tooth Extraction

The loss of a tooth isn’t something anyone expects or even wants to think about. After all, you take good care of your oral health, and the plan was for your teeth to last forever.

At the office of Zachary J. Holder, DDS, our goal is to save teeth whenever possible. However, decay or dental trauma can happen to anyone, and when it severely compromises your tooth beyond repair, extraction is often the best solution for relieving pain and eliminating infection.

Our professional team is very sensitive to the fact that you’re probably apprehensive about your procedure – almost everyone is! We’ll work together to support and encourage you throughout the procedure. You’ll find that our compassionate approach and genuine concern for your well-being will put you at ease and help you overcome your anxiety.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Severe decay and infection are two of the most common reason for extraction, but there are several other situations where tooth extraction may be necessary:

  • Dental trauma — If your tooth has broken or fractured below the gum line, extraction may be necessary.
  • Root canal infection — The infection cannot be eliminated with traditional root canal therapy.
  • Alignment issues — If a tooth is not positioned properly, it can affect the alignment of surrounding teeth and may need to be extracted.
  • Preparation for dentures — A patient who is receiving partial or complete dentures may need to have several or all teeth extracted.
  • Removal of wisdom teeth - Sometimes wisdom teeth need to be removed if there is inadequate space for the teeth to fully erupt and they become impacted. In many of these partial impaction situations it becomes impossible to fully clean around these teeth, which is a constant source of inflammation and can sometimes become infected. Because it is so difficult to perform proper oral hygiene around impacted wisdom teeth, they often develop decay and, if wedged up against the second molars in front of them, they can even cause decay to develop on these adjacent teeth.
  • Preparation for braces — Your child may need one or more teeth removed in preparation for orthodontics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing missing teeth is important for your oral health and your self-confidence. If you are missing a tooth, you may also have problems chewing and speaking clearly.

If missing teeth cause you embarrassment and discomfort, we offer several options for restoring your smile:

Dental implants are a full replacement tooth that includes an artificial root. Once your implant is placed, our doctors can use a crown, bridge, or denture, to restore function.

Bridges are a restoration that replaces missing teeth and requires the support of neighboring teeth to hold it in place.

Dentures are still an effective option for replacing multiple missing teeth, but today they look more natural and realistic than ever before. We create beautiful customized dentures that are comfortable and complement your appearance. Our dentures are designed to form a secure fit with your jaw. But some people benefit greatly by having implants placed along the gum line for the denture to snap onto. This added stability can make the denture fit much tighter and eliminate the looseness that is commonly associated with dentures.

There is no single solution for tooth replacement that is right for everyone. There’s a lot to consider when looking for the best solution that fits your needs. Budget, time constraints, and even lifestyle should all be part of the decision.

If you have missing teeth and are ready to restore your smile, please call our Baytown dental office. We will be happy to arrange a complimentary consultation to explain all your tooth replacement options.
